Transportation & Getting Around

Taxis

Taxis are the easiest way to get around. Do not agree to fixed prices; drivers are required to use the taximeter. We recommend our partner CM Taxi Sousse for reliable service, including sightseeing and airport transfers.

Louage (Shared Transport)

Louages are shared minivans that run fixed routes between cities. Great for inter-city travel and an authentic local experience. Affordable and frequent departures.

Car Rental

Car rental services are available at the airport and city center. You'll need an international driving permit or valid home country license. Roads are generally good, though driving styles may differ.

Tip: Download Google Maps or Offline Maps before arrival for navigation without data costs. Local drivers are also helpful for directions.

Money & Payment

Currency & Cash

The local currency is the Tunisian Dinar (TND). Cash is the most commonly used means of payment. Payments are usually only made in TND, not in other currencies. ATMs are readily available in Sousse.

Credit & Debit Cards

Major credit and debit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets, but not always at small local shops. Inform your bank of your travel dates to avoid card blocks.

ATMs

ATMs are available throughout Sousse in banks, shopping centers, and main streets. They typically accept Visa, Mastercard, and other international cards.

Tipping Culture

Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. A small tip (5-10% or rounding up) for restaurant service, taxi drivers, and guides is customary and appreciated for good service.

Internet, SIM & Connectivity

Mobile Phone SIM Cards

  • •Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo, and Orange offer local SIM cards with affordable data packages
  • •SIM cards are available at the airport, city center shops, and convenience stores
  • •Data speeds are generally good in Sousse; 4G coverage is extensive in tourist areas

SIM cards can be bought more cheaply after arrival at a local shop in the city instead of at the airport.

WiFi & Internet

WiFi is widely available in hotels, restaurants, and cafes throughout Sousse. Most apartments come with WiFi. Connection quality is generally reliable in tourist zones.

Water & Food Safety

Drinking Water

Tap water is generally safe for washing and brushing your teeth. It is not drinking water and can cause diarrhea. You should only drink bottled mineral water and be careful with ice cubes. Bottled water is inexpensive and widely available.

Food Safety & Shopping

  • •Street food is generally safe and delicious; popular items include pastries, grilled meats, and seafood
  • •Eat at busy local spots to ensure fresh food; high turnover means fresher products
  • •Wash fruits and vegetables before eating, or purchase pre-packaged items from supermarkets

Where to Shop

Supermarkets (Carrefour, Monoprix) offer familiar products and English labels. Local souks and markets are great for fresh produce, spices, and traditional items. Prices are lower than chain stores.

Culture & Etiquette Tips

Dress Code

In tourist areas, casual clothing is fine. When visiting local neighborhoods, cultural sites, or during Ramadan, modest dress is respectful. Avoid very revealing clothing in conservative areas.

Cultural Respect

Tunisia is a Muslim-majority country. Ramadan (the Islamic holy month) is observed with reduced service hours and restaurants closed during daylight. Showing respect for local customs and traditions is appreciated.

Alcohol Availability

Alcohol is available in hotels, restaurants, and liquor stores but less common in local neighborhoods. It's not served openly in conservative areas. Drinking alcohol in public is generally frowned upon.
